CoCure Resins and Coatings
Structural Composites developed CoCure resins and coatings as a solution to improve strain, toughness, flexibility, and thermal properties and to reduce weight, cracking and abrasion in exterior coatings due to weathering, impacts and repeated wear and tear.
The patented technology combines rigid polyester chemistry with polyurethane elastomers. Believed to be the first commercial strain (flexibility) tunable resin, the user can adjust this blend ratio allowing an order of magnitude alteration of the coating or resin properties. Special blending equipment allows for rapid changes in blend ratio. The technology opens many new opportunities for low-cost high-performance applications from strain tuned coatings to strain tuned resins that match up with the organic and inorganic reinforcements.
In CoCure resins, the elastomeric polyurethanes are combined with low-cost polyester to alter the resin properties. The result is the ability to give low-cost polyester resins the performance characteristics of more expensive high-performance resins. Evidence suggests that CoCure high-performance vinyl ester resins can have the performance of more expensive epoxy resins, although further testing and development are underway to confirm.
CoCure Advanced Marine Coatings
Increasing the elongation of coatings was essential to meeting the weight and performance requirements of certain Structural Composites R&D efforts. In the commercial refinement of the CoCure product, Interplastic Corporation was able to demonstrate that the coating formulation had vastly increased weatherability over conventional coatings. In addition to weathering the CoCure coating showed a doubling of impact toughness and a 40% increase in abrasion resistance. CoCure Strain Tunable Advanced Marine Coatings was introduced into the marine market in 2018 and was the winner of the IBEX Innovation Award for boat building material.
Metal Hybrid Technology
Another game-changing development is our CoCure composite metal hybrid technology. In one of our R&D programs, we discovered that the CoCure resin has a strong capability to bond to metals. The patent-pending technology makes metals laminate-able, allowing for the blending of metals and composites in innovative ways. Using the CoCure coating in this way eliminates post-bonding metal to composites with expensive adhesives. Inexpensive coating materials can be used to create a very strong bond between the metal and the composite. This technology also eliminates the need for expensive tooling, as the metals can be shaped and then laminated directly. The CoCure coating can also be applied to the outer metal surface as a protective coating. Introduced in 2017, this technology won the composite industry’s coveted CAMX Unsurpassed Innovation Award. A working prototype 16 ft. CoCure composite metal hybrid boat has been produced and is currently in field testing.
