Technology Spinoff to Infrastructure
Structural Composites co-founder and chairman, Dr. Ron Reichard, has been involved with composite bridge deck development and testing for over a decade. Working in conjunction with Dr. Jeffrey Volz, University of Oklahoma, they proved that using composite deck technology eliminated corrosion concerns, met or exceeded the Federal Highways Administration’s goal of 100-year lifespan, reduced weight from 130lbs per sq ft to just 22 lbs. Reduced weight enables prefabrication and subsequent field installation and resulting in accelerated bridge construction.
The full-scale prototype deck panels performed exceptionally during all phases of testing. MoDOT’s final report concluded that the panels significantly exceeded the code required design forces in all instances. In flexure, shear and bearing, the average failure load exceeded the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Design Truck factored wheel load by nearly three times.
The report noted the panels behaved linearly-elastically throughout the full range of loading and possessed significant post-buckling strength. This technology was issued a Patent# 10,151,072 on December 11, 2018. All test results can be provided on request.
